European shares edged lower on Monday amid thin trading ahead of the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays later this week.

The STOXX 600 index was down 0.1% led lower by banking stocks.

In the previous session, European shares ended near record highs on  an improving global economic outlook and optimism surrounding a smoother Brexit.

However, traders now seek direction given that the phase one US-China trade deal will spill over to the next year.

The DAX is trading higher by 0.06%, the FTSE 100 and the CAC 40 are trading lower by 0.20% and 0.10%, respectively.

Meanwhile, Asian markets finished mixed with the Hang Seng gaining 0.13%, the Nikkei 225 up 0.02%, and the Shanghai Composite losing 1.40%.
